Microsoft Guidelines for Marketplace Mobile

Microsoft Marketplace logo Pay attention if you are trying to develop an app for Marketplace for Mobile. Microsoft has issued guidelines for what it will accept. Included on the list are applications that change Microsoft’s default browser, search or media player on a cell phone. Others include using ads for carriers, those with VoIP calls on an operator’s network and apps that promote mobile voice plans. You can read the entire list of 12 no-nos at Information Week.

Apple App Store passes one billion downloads

If you had any doubt of the success of Apple‘s App Store, the fact that one billion apps have been downloaded in nine months should be enough to change your opinion. At 1:52 pm today, the App Store officially sold its 1,000,000,000th app for the iPhone and iPod touch platforms. As exciting as that is, we have the iPhone 3.0 SDK currently in beta, which will allow apps with new capabilities that aren’t yet available. Exciting times.

Alright iPhone fans, we know that the Palm Pre has been getting all the attention lately in the “awesome touchscreen phone” department, but relax. Apple has just sent out notice to all of us press-types that they are going to be presenting iPhone OS 3.0 for the first time on March 17th. That’s right, in five days you will get an “advance preview” of what Apple has been working on for the next version of the iPhone operating system, as well as a look at the new version of the SDK, which will (or should) give developers better ways to integrate their apps into the OS.

We’re excited.

iShoot Tank Game App

When Ethan Nicolas’ iShoot hit #1 on the App Store list, he quit his day job to further develop applications. That meant he was making about $21,000 a day from 10,000+ downloads after Apple’s cut. Although it has dropped to #6, the $2.99 artillery game seems to still be making the bucks. There can be up to 4 players at a time, either human or computer, to see who can be the last tank standing. There are 25 weapons, including a mega mortar, dirt ball, stinger missiles and planet buster, realistic sound effects and authentic landscapes for destroying the planet, piece by piece.

Apple announces that 500 million apps have been downloaded

Okay, look, if you are still a hater who is of the mindset that the iPhone is no big deal, today’s news out of Apple should seriously put all that to rest. This morning, the company announced that there have been 500 million apps downloaded from the App Store. With all the iPhone and iPod touch owners out there snapping these things up, it really comes as no surprise to us - especially considering that you can get some really great software for free, or for as little as $0.99.

Good on them, we say. Now can we get a few more pages allowed in the iPhone home screen area? We are three downloads away from completely filling our 9 pages, no doubt.

Vote For Best Apps

The 2008 Best App Ever Awards is the first for iPhone OS Applications. The goal of the competition is supposed to be to draw attention to the best available from the App Store, but it certainly won’t hurt sales. Although the nominations are over, you can still vote in 34 categories with 10 apps in each this week.The winners of the achievement awards will be announced January 7 at the 2009 MacWorld Expo.

HP iPrint Photo Application for iPhone

HP has developed a free application for your iPhone or iPod touch. iPrint Photo lets you print a photo stored on your device wirelessly to most HP ink jet printers. You can make the image either 4 x 6-inch or 10 x 15 cm. The app is available for downloading at the App Store if your handheld firmware is version 2.0 or higher. HP promises a simple operation so check out their site for more details.

eSnowglobe iPhone Application

Get rid of some of that last minute shopping rage with the iPhone application eSnowglobe. With 1,700 animated snowflakes that move at 60 fps, you can tilt to make it move or turn it upside down to create a mini-blizzard. With three different backgrounds and 2 modes, you can even pack a snowball to launch inside your phone. Pick a photo for background, change the colors and add sound effects or music to complete your globe. The eSnowglobe can be found at the App store for a mere $2.00.

OilCanvas iPhone Application

Big Canvas Inc. has debuted their latest Apple iPhone application that they have dubbed OilCanvas. Users can make their own artwork and save it on their library. You choose a base picture, select a brush and paint with your finger to create your own masterpiece. You can also share with friends in your PhotoShare network. OilCanvas is free to the first 50,000 downloaders ($1.99 after that) at the App Store. Big Canvas previously released PhotoShare, SmallCanvas and PhotoArtist.

Tweetsville: Our new favorite Twitter app

Tweetsville Being the big fans of Twitter that we are here are Gear Live, we are always looking for the best way to interact with the service. We’ve used apps like Twitteriffic, Twinkle, and Twittelator, but we think we’ve found one that we will be sticking with for a while. It’s called Tweetsville, and it’s an app that Tapulous purchased from an independent developer, and then incorporated into their umbrella. Here’s the description:

The ultimate dedicated Twitter client for iPhone! Send tweets and direct messages with ease. Check out the latest trends on Twitter and do powerful searches. Favorites, History, Replies… it’s all here! Tap on a tweet to reply to the user, send them a message, check out their profile. From their profile, you can also see their history, their favorites, and their friends and followers. See the number of unread direct messages in your inbox right in the tab bar. Supports inline links, bold and italic automatically in tweets by treating words like *this* as bold and like _this_ or /this/ as italic. All of this in a clean, iPhone look and feel with two looks for your tweet lists: balloons and simple.

Since release a couple of weeks ago, the team has already released an update, bringing it to version 1.1. This includes support for international formats and encodings, along with significantly enhanced stability. As I said, we’ve certainly enjoyed the app, and currently feels it’s the best thing available as far as Twitter clients are concerned. The only improvements we are looking for are faster syncing and downloading. Once they get that fixed up, this thing will truly rock. You can pick up Tweetsville on the App Store for $3.99.
